Business & Politics

The latest news in the business dailies -
ThePawar family to buy 49% in UB breweries. Sharad Pawar is the Union agriculture minister and responsible for reducing duties on wines in Maharashtra.
Apparently this all above board. Are there no laws in this country to protect against vested interests?

I think before any good laws, we need a good administrative process to make sure laws are enforced. My grand mom was selling her house when the highest offer she got was from a Judge in the High Court. The only glitch, he wanted to pay 85% (something like Rs. 50 lakhs) as unaccounted money. Where is a judge supposed to get unaccounted money from. Anyway, since my grandmom didn't think that as an old lady, she could make any use of the money, she refused it and sold it at the second highest offer price!

Congrats, you & your grandmom can rest easy knowing i was the right path to take. I agree with you regarding the admin process but this incident just annoyed me more since all parties involved are extremely well known large entities.

This isn't necessarily related to your most recent post, but I found it interesting that ISB is in Hyderabad. This is also the site of the 2007 World Military Games (like a military olympics). I was really hoping to participate as part of the men's U.S. Volleyball Team, but alas, our governing body has decided that since our record in Int'l competition is so poor, we don't warrant the expense. Part of the reason we don't do well is b/c many players on other countries' olympic teams also happen to be conscripts. This means we're competing against not only the best military players in the world, but also the best players in the world, period. Our women's team usually does well, so they get to go; pretty unfair. Anyway, I'm just bitter about a stolen chance to visit India and experience the competition/comraderie in all the other sports too. Good luck at ISB!
